Some saints feel close to us because their lives touched the very things we carry in our own hearts. Saint John Paul II is one of those saints. He was a pope who smiled at crowds of millions, a shepherd who called young people his friends, a man who forgave the person who tried to kill him, and a sufferer who carried illness in public view with quiet dignity. When you pray a st john paul ii prayer, you are asking a friend in heaven who understood family struggles, youthful searching, sickness, and fear to bring your needs before God.

On this page you will find his story, the beloved intercessory prayer to St John Paul II, and a treasury of more than 180 short prayers to him, organized by intention: for young people and students, for exams, for families and marriages, for healing and suffering, for freedom from addiction, for finding work, for vocations, for courage in hard times, for the elderly, and prayers of thanksgiving. His feast day is October 22, so this is a beautiful collection to pray in the days around his feast, and all year long.

Who Was St John Paul II?

He was born Karol Wojtyla on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, a small town in Poland. His childhood was marked by loss: his mother died when he was nine years old, his older brother died a few years later, and his father died while Karol was a young man studying in secret during the Nazi occupation of Poland. He worked in a quarry and a chemical factory, acted in an underground theatre, and quietly prepared for the priesthood in a hidden seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1946.

Karol Wojtyla became a bishop, then Archbishop of Krakow, then a cardinal. On October 16, 1978, he was elected pope, taking the name John Paul II. He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and the first pope from Poland. His papal inauguration took place on October 22, 1978, which is why the Church celebrates his feast day on October 22 each year, the day his pontificate began.

His pontificate lasted more than 26 years, one of the longest in history. He travelled to 129 countries, wrote fourteen encyclicals, founded World Youth Day, and spoke to more people in person than perhaps anyone who ever lived. He died on April 2, 2005, as crowds of young people kept vigil below his window in St Peter’s Square. Pope Francis canonized him on April 27, 2014, and the Church now honors him as Saint John Paul II, a saint of our own lifetime whose voice and face are still familiar to millions.

Why Do People Pray to St John Paul II?

He is a patron of youth and families. In 1985 he invited young people to gather in Rome, and from that joyful meeting grew World Youth Day, which has since drawn millions together around the world. He told the young, again and again, that they were not only the future of the Church but its present hope. He is also called the Pope of the Family: his teaching on marriage and the dignity of the human body, known as the Theology of the Body, has helped countless couples, and families ask his intercession for unity, for struggling marriages, and for children who have wandered from the faith.

He is a witness of suffering. On May 13, 1981, John Paul II was shot and seriously wounded in St Peter’s Square. He survived, and he publicly forgave the man who shot him, even visiting him in prison. In his later years he suffered openly from Parkinson’s disease, never hiding his trembling hands or weakening voice. Because he carried pain without bitterness, the sick turn to him with confidence. And because he lived under Nazi occupation and communist rule, people who are afraid remember his most famous words, spoken at his inauguration: “Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ.”

Before the treasury, pray the cherished intercessory prayer to St John Paul II, loved by the faithful around the world. Pray it slowly, and place your own intention in his hands at the end.

O Saint John Paul, from the window of heaven grant us your blessing. Bless the Church, which you loved and served and guided, courageously leading her along the paths of the world to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who were your great passion. Help them to dream again, and help them to look up to the heavens again to find the light that illumines the paths of life here on earth. Pray for peace in our homes and in our world, and intercede for us, Saint John Paul II, that we may live in faith, hope, and love, and one day join you in the joy of heaven. Amen.

Pray with Scripture as he did: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9). “Fear thou not; for I am with thee” (Isaiah 41:10). “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16). Now choose the prayers below that match your need today, and pray them from the heart.
