Some prayers you say once. Others you carry, day after day, like a candle you refuse to let go out. The Novena to St Jude is that kind of prayer: nine days of returning to God with the same desperate need, trusting that heaven is listening even before the answer arrives. If you are facing a situation that looks hopeless, this novena was made for you.

On this page you will find everything you need: what a novena is, when to begin so your ninth day lands on St Jude’s feast day, a daily opening prayer, and a reflection and prayer for each of the nine days. Take it one day at a time. God is not in a hurry, and neither is grace.

What Is a Novena?

A novena is a devotion of prayer repeated over nine days, usually asking God for a special grace or intention through the intercession of a saint. The practice reaches back to the very first days of the Church. After Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles, together with Mary, spent nine days in prayer in the upper room before the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Ever since, Christians have used nine days of focused prayer as a way of waiting on God with hope.

Nine days is long enough to prove to your own heart that you mean it, and short enough to hold in your hands. A novena is not a transaction and not a formula for forcing heaven’s hand. It is a school of trust. Each day you bring the same need back to God, and each day something in you changes a little: fear loosens, hope steadies, and you begin to believe that your story is not finished yet.

When to Pray the Novena to St Jude

You can pray this novena any time of year, whenever a need presses on your heart. But the most beloved time is the nine days leading up to the feast day of St Jude on October 28. To finish your novena on the feast day itself, begin on October 20 and pray one day of the novena on each day that follows, ending on October 28.

Many churches and shrines dedicated to St Jude hold public novenas in October, and joining your private prayer to that great wave of prayer around the world is a beautiful experience. Whether you begin on October 20 or on a quiet Tuesday in March, though, the rule is the same: nine days, one intention, a trusting heart. If you are starting today, then today is the perfect day to start.

How to Use This Novena

Each day, begin with the Daily Opening Prayer below. Then read that day’s reflection slowly, sit with the day’s intention for a moment, and pray the prayer for that day. After the main prayer for each day, you will find a set of short prayers on the same theme: pray them all, or pray the few that speak to your heart. Close with an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be. The whole devotion takes only a few minutes, but those minutes can change the temperature of your entire day.

Daily Opening Prayer to St Jude

Pray this opening prayer at the start of every day of the novena.

O glorious apostle, St Jude Thaddeus, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, I place myself and my needs in your care. The Church honors you as the patron of hopeless cases, and I come to you today with a case that feels hopeless to me. Pray with me and for me during these nine days. Present my intention before the throne of God, and help me to trust, the way you trusted, even when the road is hard and the answer seems far away. I open my heart to whatever God wills, and I believe that His mercy will not fail me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 1: Learning to Trust

Today’s intention: To trust God with the situation you cannot control.

Every novena begins with a decision: I will trust, even before I see. Trust does not mean you understand what God is doing. It means you believe He is doing something, and that He is good while He does it. Today, lay your need on the altar like Abraham did, with trembling hands and a willing heart.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St Jude, I bring You my need today (mention it now). I confess that I have tried to carry it alone, and I am tired. Teach me to trust You the way a child trusts a father. Where my faith feels small, lend me Yours. I choose trust today, not because I see the way out, but because I know the One who is the Way. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 1: Trust

Lord, on this first day I choose trust before I feel trust. St Jude, pray with me as I place my need in God’s hands and resist the urge to snatch it back. My hands are open, Father; fill them with Your will. Amen.

St Jude, teach me the trust you carried into unknown lands with nothing but the Gospel and God’s promise. Pray that my small faith would grow roots today. I may not see the harvest yet, but I believe in the seed. Amen.

Jesus, I trust You with the part of this problem I understand, and I am learning to trust You with the part I never will. St Jude, add your prayers to mine on this first day. Let trust be the foundation under everything this novena builds. Amen.

Father, my trust has been shaken by how long this has lasted, but it has not been destroyed. Through St Jude’s intercession, repair my confidence in Your goodness. Remind me of every past rescue until my heart settles again. Amen.

St Jude, pray for my trusting heart to outgrow my fearful imagination. Ask the Lord to show me one small evidence of His care today. I will collect these evidences like stones of remembrance for the harder days ahead. Amen.

Lord, I trust You not because my situation looks good but because You are good inside my situation. St Jude, stand beside me in this declaration today. Let heaven and my own heart hear it clearly spoken aloud. Amen.

Heavenly Father, teach me to trust the way a branch trusts the vine, without striving and without panic. Through St Jude’s prayers, connect me more deeply to Jesus today. What flows from Him is everything I actually need. Amen.

St Jude, I bring you my doubts along with my faith, because both are honestly mine. Pray that God would not be offended by my questions but honored by my staying. I am still here, Lord, and staying is my trust. Amen.

Jesus, help me trust Your heart when I cannot trace Your hand. St Jude, intercede for me until that trust becomes my reflex instead of my struggle. Day one is my seed of surrender; water it with Your mercy. Amen.

Father, I have trusted my own plans and they have brought me to this desperate place. Through St Jude’s intercession, transfer my trust from my wisdom to Yours. Your track record is perfect, and I rest my case on it. Amen.

St Jude, pray that my trust would survive the night, when fears do their loudest talking. Ask the Lord to post His peace like a guard at the door of my mind. I will sleep as an act of trust tonight. Amen.

Lord, trust is a decision I may need to make a hundred times today, so give me grace for every repetition. St Jude, pray with me as many times as it takes. Each small choosing is a brick in a stronger faith. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I trust You with my loved ones even more than I trust myself to protect them. Through St Jude’s prayers, I release them into Your keeping by name. Your watch over them is better than my worry for them. Amen.

St Jude, you trusted Jesus when following Him meant danger, travel, and an unknown grave far from home. Pray a share of that rugged trust into my softer, frightened heart. If trust carried you through martyrdom, it can carry me through this. Amen.

Jesus, I trust that this novena is not falling on deaf ears in heaven. St Jude, present this first day’s prayers with the confidence I am still growing. Believing for me until my own belief matures is a friend’s kind work. Amen.

Father, let my trust be practical today: in the calls I make, the steps I take, the peace I keep. Through St Jude’s intercession, turn my faith into footsteps. A trusting heart should eventually show in trusting hands. Amen.

St Jude, pray for the trust of my whole household, for fear is contagious but so is faith. Ask the Lord to make me a carrier of calm in my own home. Let my first day’s trust become my family’s borrowed courage. Amen.

Lord, I trust You with the timing I would never have chosen for this answer. St Jude, pray that I would stop bargaining for a faster clock. The God who made time itself knows exactly when to move in it. Amen.

Heavenly Father, day one ends with my trust spoken, prayed, and planted. Through St Jude’s prayers, guard this seed through the eight days still to come. I will water it with prayer every morning until it blooms into testimony. Amen.

Day 2: Faith When God Seems Silent

Today’s intention: To keep believing during the silence.

Silence is often the hardest part of a hopeless case. You pray and the heavens feel like brass. But silence is not absence. The teacher is never more present than during the test. St Jude preached in lands where no one seemed to listen, yet the seeds he planted are still bearing fruit today.

Faithful God, when I cannot hear You, help me remember that You still hear me. St Jude, friend of Jesus, pray for me in this silence. Strengthen my faith to believe that heaven is working in what I cannot see. I will not measure Your love by my circumstances. I will stand on Your promises until the silence breaks into song. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 2: Faith in the Silence

Lord, day two brings no headlines from heaven, and I am choosing to believe anyway. St Jude, pray for my faith to live on promises instead of feelings. Silence from You is never the same as absence from You. Amen.

St Jude, you preached to crowds that barely listened, yet you never stopped speaking truth. Pray that I would not stop praying just because the room feels quiet. Some seeds grow for a long time underground before they break the surface. Amen.

Father, when I hear nothing, teach me to remember everything You have already said in Your word. Through St Jude’s intercession, let Scripture be Your voice in the silent season. Your written promises are not on pause just because my feelings are. Amen.

Jesus, You endured the silence of the cross, when heaven seemed to say nothing at all. St Jude, pray that I would trust the Father in my silence the way You trusted Him in Yours. Resurrection was being prepared inside that quiet. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I confess I have been treating Your silence like rejection, and that has wounded my faith. Through St Jude’s prayers, correct my reading of the quiet. A working God is often a quiet God, busy on my behalf. Amen.

St Jude, pray for my ears to be tuned to God’s whispers, not only His thunder. Ask Him to help me notice the small mercies hidden inside an ordinary day. Heaven may be speaking softly on purpose, to draw me closer. Amen.

Lord, strengthen me to pray today’s prayers with the same fervor as day one’s, though nothing has visibly changed. St Jude, join your perseverance to mine. Faithfulness in the quiet is the purest kind of faithfulness there is. Amen.

Father, other people are announcing their miracles while my sky stays silent, and envy knocks at my heart. Through St Jude’s intercession, keep me celebrating others without doubting my own place in Your love. My chapter is still being written. Amen.

St Jude, intercede for everyone in this novena who woke up today to the same problem, unchanged. Pray that we would interpret the delay as preparation, not denial. What God is building slowly, He is often building permanently. Amen.

Jesus, in the garden You prayed while Your friends slept and heaven answered with an angel’s strength, not an escape. St Jude, ask for that same kind of answer for me. If the cup remains, let strength arrive to drink it. Amen.

Heavenly Father, let Your silence refine my motives until I want You more than I want the answer. Through St Jude’s prayers, purify this novena from bargaining. Seeking Your face above Your hand changes the seeker most of all. Amen.

St Jude, pray for my faith to stand on the days when prayer feels like talking to the ceiling. Ask the Lord to remind me that ceilings do not stop sound bound for heaven. My weakest prayer still arrives at a strong throne. Amen.

Lord, I will keep a record during this silence, writing down every small kindness that crosses my path. St Jude, pray that gratitude would become my evidence file against despair. By day nine, let the pages argue for God’s faithfulness better than my fears argue against it. Amen.

Father, silence is a classroom and I am a reluctant student, but I am still seated. Through St Jude’s intercession, teach me what only quiet can teach. Some lessons about Your character are only whispered, never shouted. Amen.

St Jude, you waited centuries for the devotion you now receive, almost forgotten by the very Church you served. Pray my waiting into perspective beside yours. If God vindicated your patience across ages, He can handle my nine days. Amen.

Jesus, speak one word into my situation the way You spoke into storms, even if I must wait to hear it. St Jude, keep my heart positioned to listen rather than to despair. A listening heart is never an abandoned heart. Amen.

Heavenly Father, in this quiet I choose worship as my answer to uncertainty. Through St Jude’s prayers, let praise fill the space where explanations are missing. Worship declares that the silence has not changed who You are. Amen.

St Jude, pray for the night hours of this novena, when silence feels loudest and hope feels thinnest. Ask the Lord to meet me in the dark with His presence, which needs no sound to be real. Morning will testify that He was there. Amen.

Lord, day two ends the way it began, in quiet, but I am not the same quiet believer. Through St Jude’s intercession, let this silence deepen me instead of defeating me. I trust that the God who seems silent is the God who never stops working. Amen.

Day 3: Patience in the Waiting

Today’s intention: To wait on God’s timing without giving up.

Three days in, the temptation is to quit or to take matters back into your own hands. Patience is not passive; it is hope with its sleeves rolled up, doing today’s duties while God handles tomorrow’s miracle. Even the longest winter in your life is still only a season, and seasons change.

Lord, give me the patience of the saints. Through St Jude’s prayers, calm the urgency in my chest and teach me to wait well. If the answer tarries, let my hope not tarry with it. I believe that You are never late, and that what You have planned for me is worth every day of this wait. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 3: Patience

Lord, three days of praying and the calendar still argues with my faith. St Jude, pray for patience to settle into my bones like a second heartbeat. Waiting on You is never wasted time, even when it feels unbearably slow. Amen.

St Jude, you spent years planting the Gospel in soil that was slow to respond. Pray that I would keep sowing prayer in my own slow season. The harvest belongs to God; the sowing belongs to me, and I will not quit the field. Amen.

Father, my impatience keeps inventing deadlines You never agreed to, then accusing You of missing them. Through St Jude’s intercession, forgive that unfair accounting. Your schedule for my life is written in love, not in delay. Amen.

Jesus, teach me the patience You showed with slow disciples and slower crowds. St Jude, ask for a measure of that unhurried heart for my rushed one. If You were never frantic, my panic is not a spiritual requirement. Amen.

Heavenly Father, use these waiting days to do in me what the answer alone could never do. Through St Jude’s prayers, let patience have its perfect work, as Your word teaches. I would rather arrive whole than arrive quickly. Amen.

St Jude, pray against the urge to force my own answer, the Abraham-and-Hagar mistake of helping God in harmful ways. Ask the Lord to hold my hands back from harmful shortcuts. What is born of impatience costs more than it gives. Amen.

Lord, give me patience with the process of healing, change, and paperwork that crawls at its own pace. St Jude, intercede for my attitude inside the slowness. A calm spirit in a slow line is its own small testimony. Amen.

Father, patience is hard when the bills, symptoms, and questions are not patient with me. Through St Jude’s intercession, supply what my circumstances refuse to supply: time, calm, and breathing room. Your grace can outpace my pressures. Amen.

St Jude, pray for everyone in this novena who is tired at day three, the exact place many people abandon prayer. Ask God to mark this midpoint of the first stretch with encouragement. Quitting at day three forfeits six days of grace. Amen.

Jesus, You promised that those who wait on the Lord renew their strength, so I am waiting as an act of expectation. St Jude, add your prayers to mine for renewed strength today. Let me rise from this prayer like an eagle, not like a victim. Amen.

Heavenly Father, patience with people is draining my patience for everything else, so refill me at the source. Through St Jude’s prayers, let Your long-suffering love flow through my short-fused reactions. The people testing me may also be carrying invisible weights. Amen.

St Jude, intercede for a patient mind that stops replaying worst outcomes on a loop. Ask the Lord to interrupt the cycle with His peace whenever it starts. A mind can be trained toward trust the way it was trained toward fear. Amen.

Lord, I surrender my hurry about the future of my children, my health, and my provision. St Jude, pray that I would walk at the pace of grace today. God is already in my tomorrow, arranging what my hurry cannot improve. Amen.

Father, Noah waited through rain, ridicule, and a long floating silence before the waters fell. Through St Jude’s intercession, give me ark-builder patience for my own long weather. Obedience during the wait is the shape faith takes in real life. Amen.

St Jude, pray that I would notice progress too small for headlines: a slightly easier breath, a slightly lighter hour. Ask God to train my eyes for gradual grace. Mountains often move one stone at a time. Amen.

Jesus, when the answer tarries, let my worship not tarry with it, just as today’s main prayer asked. St Jude, keep my praise on schedule even when heaven’s reply is not. Praise in the waiting room is faith with its sleeves rolled up. Amen.

Heavenly Father, give me patience for the person I am becoming, who learns slowly and stumbles honestly. Through St Jude’s prayers, let me extend to myself the same grace You extend to me. Growth underground is still growth. Amen.

St Jude, pray for a calm evening to close this third day, free from rehearsing and ruminating. Ask the Lord to let my body rest in the truth my mind believes. Patience is also practiced lying down, trusting God in the dark. Amen.

Lord, day three is complete and I am still here, still praying, still believing, and that itself is grace. Through St Jude’s intercession, carry this patient momentum into tomorrow. The wait is not winning; my hope is quietly outlasting it. Amen.

Day 4: Prayer for Healing

Today’s intention: For healing of body, mind, or heart, for yourself or a loved one.

By day four, many people bring a name to this novena: their own, or the name of someone lying in a hospital bed or fighting a quiet battle at home. Jesus healed everyone who came to Him in faith, and He has not changed. Bring the sickness, the pain, and the fear, and lay them at His feet today.

Great Physician, I lift up this need for healing to You (name the person and the need). St Jude, you watched Jesus touch the untouchable and raise the hopeless. Pray with me now for complete restoration. Touch what medicine cannot reach, heal what time has wounded, and let Your resurrection power flow into every weak place. I receive Your healing by faith, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 4: Healing

Great Physician, on this fourth day I name the sickness plainly before You, hiding nothing and fearing less than yesterday. St Jude, pray with me for complete healing, from the root of the problem to its farthest branch. Your touch reaches what scans cannot see. Amen.

St Jude, pray for the pain that woke me again last night and waits for me again today. Ask Jesus to lay His hand on the exact place that hurts. Even a small relief today would preach a large sermon to my faith. Amen.

Lord Jesus, You healed a woman who only touched the hem of Your garment, so let my faith reach out today. St Jude, add your intercession to my reaching. Power flowed toward desperation then, and I believe it flows still. Amen.

Father, I pray for the mind inside this healing journey, for fear can sicken what sickness began. Through St Jude’s prayers, heal my thoughts alongside my body. Let peace be the medicine I take between all the others. Amen.

St Jude, intercede for the doctors, nurses, and caregivers tending this case with their skill and their kindness. Pray that heaven would guide their decisions and steady their hands. Bless the instruments of healing while we ask the Healer Himself to work. Amen.

Heavenly Father, heal the weariness that long illness breeds in the whole family, not only in the patient. Through St Jude’s prayers, rotate strength among us like watchmen taking turns. No one in this house should have to be strong every hour. Amen.

Lord, I ask for healing of the wound beneath the wound, the old hurt that sickness keeps reopening. St Jude, pray for restoration that goes deeper than symptoms. Make me whole in the places where wholeness began to unravel years ago. Amen.

St Jude, pray for sleep to return to this sick body, for healing rides on rest more than we admit. Ask the Lord to quiet pain through the night hours. Let tomorrow’s strength be built in tonight’s stillness. Amen.

Jesus, You wept at a grave You were about to empty, so You understand the tears around this sickbed. St Jude, pray with our whole grieving, hoping family today. Let compassion and power arrive in the same visit, as they always do with You. Amen.

Father, if healing comes through surgery, therapy, or long medication, I receive that path as Your provision too. Through St Jude’s intercession, bless the ordinary means with extraordinary effect. Your miracles sometimes wear hospital clothing. Amen.

St Jude, pray for the appetite, energy, and small functions this illness has stolen one by one. Ask the Lord to restore them in reverse order, like lights coming back on in a house. Each returned strength is a flag of the coming victory. Amen.

Lord, heal the fear of recurrence that shadows every good report and every better day. St Jude, intercede so that progress can be enjoyed instead of distrusted. Let gratitude, not dread, be the narrator of my recovery. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray today for someone else’s healing, setting my own need beside theirs without jealousy. Through St Jude’s prayers, visit that hospital room, that home, that hidden suffering. Intercession for others is healing work for my own heart too. Amen.

St Jude, you know that mental and emotional pain can hurt as truly as any broken bone. Pray for healing where the wounds are invisible and the smiles are performances. Ask Jesus to mend minds and lift heaviness that has no bandage. Amen.

Jesus, by Your stripes we are healed, and today I lean the full weight of this case on that finished work. St Jude, pray that my faith would rest instead of strain. The Healer has already paid for what I am asking. Amen.

Father, give this body patience with its own slow repair, cell by cell and week by week. Through St Jude’s intercession, let me cooperate with healing instead of resenting its pace. What You restore thoroughly, You restore permanently. Amen.

St Jude, pray for financial provision to walk beside this medical need, so bills do not poison recovery. Ask the Provider to cover what insurance and savings cannot. Healing should not have to compete with debt for my attention. Amen.

Lord, I pray for the healing of memories attached to this illness: the frightening day, the hard words, the long corridor. St Jude, ask God to redeem even the story of this sickness. Let the scar become a signature of survival, not a source of pain. Amen.

Great Physician, day four of this novena I dedicate entirely to Your healing name. Through St Jude’s prayers, let faith for restoration rise in me one more level. Whether healing leaps or walks, I will follow it out of this valley praising You. Amen.

Day 5: Strength for the Middle of the Storm

Today’s intention: For strength to endure what cannot yet be changed.

The middle of a novena is like the middle of the night: the darkest point, but also the proof that dawn is closer than it was. God does not always calm the storm immediately. Sometimes He calms His child in the middle of it and gives strength that surprises even the one who receives it. You have made it halfway. Do not stop now.

Mighty God, I am weary, but I am still here, and I am still praying. Through the intercession of St Jude, pour fresh strength into my spirit today. Be my anchor in the waves and my shelter in the wind. What I cannot change, help me to carry with grace. What I cannot understand, help me to survive with faith. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 5: Strength

Mighty God, the middle of this storm has found me tired in body and thin in spirit. St Jude, pray a fresh supply of strength into me today, measured exactly to this day’s demands. Tomorrow’s grace can wait for tomorrow; I need today’s portion now. Amen.

St Jude, you endured shipwrecked plans, hostile crowds, and lonely roads without surrendering your mission. Pray that same endurance into my situation at its midpoint. Halfway through the storm is too far to turn back and too close to quit. Amen.

Lord, strengthen my hands for the work that still must be done while I wait for change. Through St Jude’s intercession, keep me functioning in faith, not just feeling in faith. Ordinary duties carried bravely are a quiet form of victory. Amen.

Father, I have been strong for everyone else and have nothing left in private, so I come to be refilled. St Jude, ask the Lord to minister to the minister today. Even anchors need to be held by something greater. Amen.

Jesus, You withdrew to lonely places to regain strength from the Father, so teach me holy rest without guilt. St Jude, pray that a pause would restore me rather than shame me. Strength renewed in secret shows up in public. Amen.

Heavenly Father, strengthen my resolve at the exact point where I usually break, that familiar hour, thought, or phone call. Through St Jude’s prayers, fortify the weak gate of my endurance. Let this time be the time I hold. Amen.

St Jude, pray for strength in my body: for legs that must keep standing, hands that must keep working, eyes that must keep watching. Ask God to be the strength of my heart and my portion forever. What He sustains cannot collapse. Amen.

Lord, the storm has lasted longer than the forecast anyone gave me, so I need storm-length strength, not shower-length. Through St Jude’s intercession, upgrade my supply to match my season. Your resources are sized by Your riches, not by my emergency. Amen.

Father, strengthen the people standing in this storm with me, for shared weather is still weather. St Jude, pray over my family, my friends, my fellow sufferers today. A cord of several strands holds weight that snaps a single thread. Amen.

St Jude, half of this novena is now behind me, and I count that as Your doing, Lord, not mine. Pray that reaching the middle would feel like momentum instead of exhaustion. The same grace that carried five days can carry four more. Amen.

Jesus, be my anchor in the literal sense today: keep me from drifting into despair, bitterness, or reckless decisions. St Jude, add your prayers to my holding on. An anchored soul can endure waves that would scatter an unanchored one. Amen.

Heavenly Father, give me strength to accept help, which for me is sometimes harder than giving it. Through St Jude’s prayers, soften my pride until I can receive without shame. Being carried for a stretch is not the same as being defeated. Amen.

St Jude, pray for emotional strength to face the same headlines, symptoms, and questions without crumbling each time. Ask the Lord to thicken my hope the way calluses protect working hands. Sensitivity is a gift, but today I need armor too. Amen.

Lord, strengthen my memory of why I started this novena, because the middle blurs beginnings. St Jude, remind me of the hope I carried on day one. Remembering the reason is fuel for the remaining road. Amen.

Father, when I cannot feel strong, let me act on the strength of Your word instead of my feelings. Through St Jude’s intercession, let Scripture be the spine I borrow today. Your promises hold weight my emotions cannot. Amen.

St Jude, intercede for a second wind in this trial, the kind athletes find when the race seems finished. Pray that heaven would breathe fresh endurance into my spirit this afternoon, this evening, this very hour. I am still in this race, Lord, by Your grace. Amen.

Jesus, You carried a cross heavier than mine on a body weaker from scourging, yet You finished the road. St Jude, pray that Your finishing strength would be my portion for my smaller cross. What carried Christ through Friday can carry me through today. Amen.

Heavenly Father, strengthen my hope against the specific lie that nothing will ever change for me. Through St Jude’s prayers, answer that lie with Your long record of turning things around. Storms have seasons; my God has none. Amen.

Mighty God, day five closes with my strength renewed at the source rather than borrowed from circumstances. Through St Jude’s intercession, carry this anchored, sheltered, strengthened heart into day six. The middle of the storm is also the middle of the miracle. Amen.

Day 6: Hope Renewed

Today’s intention: To let hope rise again in a heart that has been disappointed.

Disappointment has a way of talking us out of hoping ever again, because hoping feels risky. But hope is not wishful thinking. Hope is an anchor for the soul, firm and secure (Hebrews 6:19). Today the novena turns a corner. You are no longer only asking; you are beginning to expect.

God of hope, breathe on the embers of my heart today. St Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray that my expectation would rise again. I refuse to let yesterday’s disappointment write tomorrow’s story. Fill me with all joy and peace as I trust in You, so that I may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 6: Hope Renewed

God of hope, day six asks me to hope again after hope has cost me tears before. St Jude, pray beside me as I take the risk of expecting good. A heart that hopes again is a heart already healing. Amen.

St Jude, your very title calls you the hope of the hopeless, so be true to your name in my life today. Pray that expectation would rise in me like morning light, gradually and then completely. Dawn does not ask permission from the night. Amen.

Father, disappointment taught me to lower my expectations until they barely existed, calling it protection. Through St Jude’s intercession, forgive my small hoping and enlarge it again. You are not honored by my expecting almost nothing from Your goodness. Amen.

Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life, and hopeless graves are Your specialty. St Jude, pray that resurrection hope would visit the dead places of my story today. What I buried in despair, teach me to water with expectation. Amen.

Heavenly Father, renew my hope the way spring renews a tree that looked dead all winter. Through St Jude’s prayers, let small green signs appear in my situation and in my spirit. I will celebrate shoots before I demand fruit. Amen.

St Jude, pray for my imagination, which disappointment has trained to picture only bad endings. Ask the Lord to retrain it with His promises until I can picture good again. A hopeful imagination is often the first room the answer enters. Amen.

Lord, I have been afraid to say my hopes out loud, as if speaking them would jinx them. St Jude, hear me speak them plainly in this prayer today. Hope confessed is hope strengthened, and heaven is not fragile about my words. Amen.

Father, the anchor of hope holds firm and secure, even when the surface of my life is rough. Through St Jude’s intercession, let me feel the chain pulled taut today, evidence that I am held. Storms move ships, but anchors decide how far. Amen.

St Jude, pray for hope in the specific place where I have stopped expecting anything: that relationship, that dream, that body, that account. Ask God to surprise me exactly there. The corner I gave up on may be the corner He chooses. Amen.

Jesus, fill me with joy and peace in believing, as Your apostle prayed for the Romans. St Jude, pray that believing would feel less like straining and more like resting today. Overflow is Your idea, Lord, and I am ready to spill. Amen.

Heavenly Father, renew hope in my household, where long trouble has made everyone cautious about good news. Through St Jude’s prayers, let a lighter atmosphere enter our home today. Shared hope multiplies the way shared sorrow once divided us. Amen.

St Jude, intercede for the hope of people who pray this novena for situations older than some of the people praying them. Pray that longevity of trouble would not be mistaken for impossibility of change. Sarah laughed at a promise fulfilled in impossible old age. Amen.

Lord, let hope make me brave enough to plan again: to apply, to book, to prepare, to try. St Jude, pray that my actions would start agreeing with my prayers. Expectation that moves the feet is faith in working clothes. Amen.

Father, when hope rises, old grief sometimes rises with it, grieving how long the winter lasted. Through St Jude’s intercession, let grief and hope share my heart without a war. Tears and expectation can sit at the same table. Amen.

St Jude, pray that my renewed hope would be stubborn, outlasting moods, headlines, and setbacks. Ask the Lord to make my expectation less like weather and more like climate. One cloudy day should not cancel a turning season. Amen.

Jesus, You told Your disciples not to let their hearts be troubled, as if hope were a decision within reach. St Jude, help me make that decision again at this hour. I choose hope today the way I chose it on day one, only stronger. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I pray for hope to become contagious through me to someone who has none left. Through St Jude’s prayers, let my renewed expectation be borrowed courage for a fellow sufferer. Hope shared is hope doubled, never halved. Amen.

St Jude, pray for the evening of this sixth day, that I would lie down rehearsing mercies instead of fears. Ask the Lord to let hope be the last voice I hear before sleep. What I meditate on at night, I wake up believing. Amen.

God of hope, the corner has turned in this novena, from asking to expecting, and I feel the difference. Through St Jude’s intercession, keep this renewed hope watered through the final three days. What rises by Your Spirit will not fall by my circumstances. Amen.

Day 7: Gratitude Before the Answer

Today’s intention: To thank God in advance, and for every grace already received.

Thanking God before the answer arrives is one of the boldest acts of faith there is. It says: I know who my Father is, even before I see what He will do. Gratitude also opens your eyes. When you start counting mercies in the middle of a crisis, you discover that God has been closer than you realized all along.

Father, before I see a single change, I thank You. Thank You for never leaving me, for every small mercy in this hard season, and for the answer that is already on its way. St Jude, join my thanksgiving to yours. Whatever comes, I will praise the name of Jesus, because He is worthy and because He is mine. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 7: Gratitude

Father, today I thank You before anything changes, because gratitude is my confession that You are already good. St Jude, join your thanksgiving to mine until it sounds like a choir instead of a whisper. This praise is not denial; it is defiance against despair. Amen.

St Jude, help me count today’s mercies one by one, the way I have been counting my problems. Pray that my gratitude list would grow longer than my grievance list by tonight. What I count, I notice, and what I notice, I enjoy. Amen.

Lord, thank You for the roof, the meal, the breath, and the people, the ordinary mercies I have walked past while begging for extraordinary ones. Through St Jude’s intercession, forgive my overlooking and open my eyes. Abundance was hiding inside the ordinary all along. Amen.

Jesus, thank You for never leaving me in this trial, even on the days Your presence felt like a rumor. St Jude, thank the Father with me for a companionship I did not always sense but never actually lost. Presence does not depend on my feelings to be real. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for the answer already traveling toward my life, unseen but dispatched in mercy. Through St Jude’s prayers, let my gratitude arrive before the answer does, preparing a welcome for it. A thankful heart is an open door. Amen.

St Jude, thank God with me for the people who carried my faith when I could not carry it myself. Pray blessings over every friend, stranger, and family member who prayed, gave, or simply stayed. Their kindness was heaven wearing human faces. Amen.

Father, thank You for what this hard season has taught me about prayer, patience, and my own heart. Through St Jude’s intercession, I bless even the curriculum I never chose. Some treasures are only buried in valleys. Amen.

Lord, I give thanks for the closed doors too, the ones I wept over before I understood them. St Jude, pray that hindsight would keep schooling my gratitude. Every no that protected me deserves a place in my thanksgiving. Amen.

St Jude, intercede a song into my mouth today, for gratitude that stays silent shrinks. Ask the Lord to tune my complaints into choruses one verse at a time. A singing prisoner has shaken prisons before. Amen.

Jesus, thank You for hearing all six days of this novena so far, every repeated word and every tear between them. St Jude, present my gratitude at the throne you present my requests to. Nothing I have prayed has been lost, ignored, or filed away. Amen.

Heavenly Father, thank You for sustaining mercies: the body that still functions, the mind that still hopes, the faith that still prays. Through St Jude’s prayers, let me honor what remains instead of only mourning what is gone. What remains is more than I sometimes admit. Amen.

St Jude, pray gratitude into my family’s mouth as well, for trouble has made us fluent in worry. Ask God to give our home new vocabulary around the table tonight. Thanksgiving is a language a household can relearn together. Amen.

Father, I thank You that my story is not finished, that blank pages remain and You hold the pen. Through St Jude’s intercession, gratitude for the unwritten chapters steadies me for the unwritten answers. An unfinished story cannot yet be called a tragedy. Amen.

Lord, thank You for mercies I will only discover later, the disasters quietly prevented, the dangers I slept through. St Jude, add thanks for the invisible column of my testimony. Heaven has been busier on my behalf than earth has reported. Amen.

St Jude, pray that my gratitude would survive the answer, not evaporate the moment relief arrives. Ask the Lord to make me one who returns to say thank You, like the single leper who came back. Memory is gratitude’s backbone, and I intend to keep mine strong. Amen.

Jesus, thank You for prayers You answered differently than I asked, with better mathematics than mine. St Jude, help me bless the substitutions instead of resenting them. Your wisdom has edited my requests more kindly than my worry ever did. Amen.

Heavenly Father, let gratitude set the agenda of this seventh day, so that asking follows thanking for once. Through St Jude’s prayers, I bring my list of gifts before my list of needs today. The order of my prayer is itself a sermon to my soul. Amen.

St Jude, thank the Holy Spirit with me for comfort in the night watches of this trial. Pray that I would never call those quiet consolations small again. Being comforted in the dark is no lesser miracle than being rescued at dawn. Amen.

Father, day seven ends with my hands full of thanks and my request still in Your hands, and both feel right. Through St Jude’s intercession, let this gratitude carry me into surrender tomorrow. A thankful heart surrenders more peacefully than a fearful one. Amen.

Day 8: Surrendering the Outcome

Today’s intention: To surrender the outcome to God’s perfect will.

Surrender is not giving up. It is giving over: placing the outcome in hands far wiser and kinder than your own. Even Jesus, in Gethsemane, prayed for the cup to pass and then surrendered to the Father’s will, and the world was saved through that surrender. What you release to God, He can resurrect.

Lord Jesus, I have told You what I want. Now I trust You with what I need. Through St Jude’s intercession, I surrender this situation and its outcome completely to Your will. Your plans for me are good, even when they are not the plans I drew. Not my will, Father, but Yours be done, and let my heart rest in that prayer. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 8: Surrender

Lord Jesus, on this eighth day I open my hands around an outcome I have been gripping until my knuckles ache. St Jude, pray with me as I release it into the Father’s will. What I surrender, I do not lose; I relocate it to safer hands. Amen.

St Jude, surrender feels like defeat to my frightened heart, so teach it the truth your life learned. Pray that I would see giving over as the doorway, not the exit. The apostles surrendered everything and gained the world for Christ. Amen.

Father, I surrender the timeline, the method, and the cast of people I had scripted for my answer. Through St Jude’s intercession, write the story with Your own casting and Your own clock. Your version has never once been the lesser one. Amen.

Jesus, in Gethsemane You asked honestly for another way and then bowed to the Father’s way. St Jude, pray that my honesty and my obedience could share one prayer like Yours did. Wanting something different does not disqualify my surrender. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I surrender my need to understand before I obey, to approve before I trust. Through St Jude’s prayers, let faith operate without the guarantees my mind keeps demanding. Some peace only exists on the far side of explanation. Amen.

St Jude, intercede for the part of me still negotiating, offering God ninety percent and hiding the rest. Pray for a complete surrender, down to the last guarded corner. Partial release is just slower gripping, and I am tired of gripping. Amen.

Lord, I surrender the people I have been trying to fix, change, or rescue by my own strength. St Jude, present them to Jesus by name with me today. They were always Yours to reach; I return them to the only hands that can. Amen.

Father, what I release to You, You can resurrect, and what I clutch, I can only crush. Through St Jude’s intercession, loosen my hold on this outcome one finger at a time. Resurrection has only ever been performed on surrendered things. Amen.

St Jude, pray that surrender would bring rest tonight instead of rehearsal, that I would sleep like someone who has truly handed something over. Ask the Lord to keep watch over my released request while I rest. Night shifts belong to heaven now. Amen.

Jesus, I surrender my definition of a good outcome and receive Yours in its place. St Jude, pray that my heart would eventually call Your answer good, even if it arrives dressed differently than my request. Goodness is defined by the Giver, not by my first preference. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I give You my disappointment in advance, should the answer differ from my hope. Through St Jude’s prayers, prepare a soft place in my heart for an unexpected mercy. Disappointment surrendered early becomes worship later. Amen.

St Jude, pray for courage to surrender publicly, to stop pretending I have this situation under control. Ask God to turn my honest weakness into witness for others still pretending. A surrendered life preaches louder than a polished one. Amen.

Lord, I surrender the battle I keep fighting in my mind at 3 a.m., drafting speeches and rehearsing disasters. St Jude, take those night negotiations to the throne and return with peace. The war in my thoughts ends when the outcome changes owners. Amen.

Father, surrender includes my reputation, my pride, and how this story makes me look. Through St Jude’s intercession, free me from managing appearances while I wait for rescue. You defended the honor of forgotten saints; You can guard mine. Amen.

St Jude, you surrendered your homeland, your safety, and finally your life for the Gospel you carried. Pray a martyr’s calm into my much smaller surrender today. If everything given to God is kept forever, then nothing I release is truly lost. Amen.

Jesus, I place my request on the altar and step back from it, the hardest two motions of my faith. St Jude, stand with me at the distance obedience requires. What stays on the altar belongs to heaven; what I keep grabbing belongs to anxiety. Amen.

Heavenly Father, let surrender make me gentle, not numb: still caring, still hoping, but no longer strangling the outcome. Through St Jude’s prayers, teach me the difference between holy release and hopeless resignation. One trusts God; the other has stopped expecting Him. Amen.

St Jude, pray for my family to surrender this outcome together, instead of each of us clutching a private version of it. Ask the Lord to unite us in one shared trust. A household that releases together also rejoices together. Amen.

Lord Jesus, day eight ends with empty hands and a strangely full heart, exactly as You promised the poor in spirit. Through St Jude’s intercession, keep my grip open through the final day tomorrow. Whatever You place in surrendered hands, I will call it grace. Amen.

Day 9: Thanksgiving and Complete Trust

Today’s intention: To finish the novena with thanksgiving and unshakeable trust.

You made it to the ninth day. Whether the answer has already broken through or you are still waiting, something holy has happened: you sought God for nine days and He has met you in every one of them. Finish this novena the way you began it, on your knees, but finish it standing taller in your soul than when you started.

Faithful God, thank You for walking with me through these nine days. Thank You for every prayer heard, every tear seen, and every promise that still stands. St Jude, my patron and friend, thank you for interceding for me. I leave my request in the hands of Jesus with complete trust. However and whenever He answers, I will say: the Lord has been good to me. Amen.

More Short Prayers for Day 9: Thanksgiving and Complete Trust

Faithful God, nine days ago I began this novena trembling, and today I finish it thankful. St Jude, thank you for never missing a single day of intercession for me. Whatever the next chapter holds, this chapter already proves I was heard. Amen.

St Jude, my patron and friend, I honor you today as I promised I would when favors were granted. Pray my gratitude into the courts of heaven with your own strong voice. A promise of thanksgiving made in desperation deserves to be kept in joy. Amen.

Father, thank You for changing me across these nine days, even in the places where my situation has not yet changed. Through St Jude’s intercession, I count my steadier heart as a real and present answer. The one doing the praying has been renovated while praying for the problem. Amen.

Jesus, I leave my request in Your hands today without taking a copy back for my anxiety to manage. St Jude, seal this novena with your prayers the way a letter is sealed before sending. It belongs to heaven now, completely and finally. Amen.

Heavenly Father, complete trust means I can say the Lord has been good to me before the evidence finishes arriving. Through St Jude’s prayers, let that sentence become my testimony in advance. Faith talks about the future in the language of gratitude. Amen.

St Jude, thank you for carrying my name before the throne on days when my own prayers were only tears. Pray for everyone whose novena ends today alongside mine. Let a chorus of finishers rise to heaven louder than any single desperate beginning. Amen.

Lord, I thank You for every day of this novena individually: for trust on day one, endurance at the middle, surrender on day eight. St Jude, help me remember the journey as carefully as I will remember the answer. The road itself was full of God. Amen.

Father, if the answer arrived during these nine days, I praise You without embarrassment and without delay. Through St Jude’s intercession, let my testimony be shared generously, as the tradition of this devotion teaches. Someone’s day one needs to hear about my day nine. Amen.

St Jude, if I am still waiting as this novena closes, pray that my trust would be called complete anyway. Ask the Lord to let unfinished business feel like a comma in my story, not a period. The Author has not set down His pen. Amen.

Jesus, thank You for the discipline of returning daily, which taught me that devotion outlasts emotion. St Jude, pray that I would keep a rhythm of prayer after the novena ends. Nine days built a doorway; help me keep walking through it. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I give thanks for the community of believers who have prayed this same novena across the centuries before me. Through St Jude’s prayers, I feel less alone at this finish line than I felt at the start. Desperate hearts have never been a small congregation. Amen.

St Jude, present my final day’s gratitude for the people who prayed this novena with me or for me. Pray blessings over the friend who sent a verse, the family member who lit a candle, the stranger who understood. Heaven keeps excellent records of kindness. Amen.

Lord, complete trust lets me bless You in the waiting room one last time before I leave it. St Jude, join this closing praise until it echoes past the ninth day. My worship is not a rental that expires when the novena does. Amen.

Father, thank You for the promises that still stand over my life, unexpired by time and unthreatened by circumstances. Through St Jude’s intercession, I re-read them today like letters from a faithful friend. Every one of them still has my name on it. Amen.

St Jude, as your feast day dawns, the whole Church thanks God for the forgotten apostle who became the hopeless world’s friend. Pray that my small story would join the great cloud of answered believers you have helped. Oblivion never had the final word on you, and despair will not have it on me. Amen.

Jesus, I commit the results of this novena to You as an offering, not as a transaction I am auditing. St Jude, pray that gratitude would guard my heart from scorekeeping. Gifts received with thanks multiply; gifts demanded sour in the hand. Amen.

Heavenly Father, let the peace I feel at this finish line become a reference point for future storms. Through St Jude’s prayers, store this day in my memory as evidence. When trouble returns, I will point back to these nine days and say: He did it before. Amen.

St Jude, pray one more petition with me on this final day: not for myself, but for everyone beginning a desperate novena tomorrow. Ask the Lord to meet them at their day one the way He met me at mine. My answered prayer should become someone else’s introduction to hope. Amen.

Faithful God, with my whole heart and complete trust, I close these nine days the way they deserve to close: in praise. St Jude, worker of miracles and hope of the hopeless, pray for us always. The Lord has been good to me, and the Lord will be good to me, forever. Amen.

Closing Prayer for Day 9

End your novena with this closing prayer, a promise of gratitude that has been part of devotion to St Jude for generations.

O blessed St Jude, I thank you with all my heart for your prayers during these nine days. I promise to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you wherever I go. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored and glorified, loved and preserved, throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. St Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Amen.

Extra Prayers of Thanksgiving to Close Your Novena

If your heart still has more thanks in it than one prayer can hold, close your novena with these extra prayers of thanksgiving. Pray them on the feast day itself, or on the first Sunday after your novena ends.

Lord, thank You for the arithmetic of mercy, in which nine days of prayer outweighed years of trouble in my soul. St Jude, add your Amen to mine until it rings through our home. Gratitude is the sound this novena makes as it lands. Amen.

St Jude, I publicly thank you, as generations of answered believers have done before me, in newspapers, in churches, and now in this prayer. Pray that my public thanks would lead one hidden sufferer to begin praying. Public gratitude is evangelism for the hopeless. Amen.

Father, thank You for honoring the small faith I brought, which was mostly tears and attendance. Through St Jude’s intercession, I learn again that showing up is itself a form of believing. You never despised my little; You multiplied it. Amen.

Jesus, thank You for the cross-shaped shape of this whole journey: desperation, persistence, surrender, and rising trust. St Jude, pray that I would recognize this pattern faster the next time trouble comes. A believer with a pattern is never truly lost. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for St Jude himself, for his life, his martyrdom, and his centuries of quiet intercession. Through his prayers I have been helped, and through his example I have been taught. The forgotten are never forgotten by You. Amen.

St Jude, thank you for being the patron of people exactly like me, whose cases looked finished to everyone but God. Pray that I would become, in small ways, a patron of hope for others in my turn. Received mercy should always be recycled into given mercy. Amen.

Lord, thank You for the feast day that crowns this devotion, a yearly reminder that desperate prayer has a patron and a party. St Jude, celebrate with us as we celebrate you. Heaven’s calendar keeps the appointments that earth’s despair tried to cancel. Amen.

Father, as I light one final candle of thanks, let it stand for every prayer of these nine days still traveling toward its answer. Through St Jude’s intercession, keep its flame company until each one arrives. A candle of gratitude burns differently than a candle of begging: brighter, and at rest. Amen.

Faithful God, my last word in this novena is the first word of my testimony: thanks. St Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us, today, on your feast, and at the hour of every future need. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Practical Tips for Praying the Novena

  • Pray at the same time every day. A fixed time, such as first thing in the morning or before bed, turns the novena into an appointment with God that your whole day starts to respect.
  • Light a candle. A small candle beside you while you pray is an old and lovely tradition. It is a picture of your hope: a flame that keeps standing in the dark.
  • Keep a simple journal. Write one or two lines each day: the day’s intention, anything that encouraged you, and any small answers you notice. By day nine, you will have a record of grace to look back on.
  • Write your intention down. Seeing your request in your own handwriting makes it real and keeps your prayer focused across all nine days.
  • Invite someone to pray with you. A spouse, a friend, or a family member praying the same novena adds strength and accountability. Where two or three gather, Jesus promised to be in the midst.
  • Add a small act of charity. Helping someone else while you wait for help is a powerful way to live your faith out loud.

Frequently Asked Questions About the St Jude Novena

When should I start the Novena to St Jude?

To finish on the feast day of St Jude, start on October 20 and pray the ninth day on October 28. But you are not limited to October. Start whenever a need arises, any day of the year. God does not keep office hours, and neither does this novena.

What if I miss a day of the novena?

Do not panic and do not start over in despair. Simply pick up the next day where you left off and finish all nine days of prayer. God is looking at your heart, not grading your streak. Many people complete a missed day by praying two days together the following day. What matters is that you return and finish.

Can I pray the St Jude novena any time of year?

Yes, absolutely. The October novena before the feast day is the most popular, but people pray this novena in every month, whenever a situation turns desperate. Heaven hears it just as well in February as in October.

Can I pray the novena for someone else?

Yes, and it is a beautiful gift. Simply hold that person and their need in your intention each day. You can even tell them you are praying a novena for them; few things comfort a struggling heart like knowing someone is storming heaven on their behalf for nine straight days.

What should I do after the novena ends?

Give thanks, whether the answer has arrived or is still on its way. Share your testimony if your prayer is answered; stories of answered prayer build faith in others. And keep a trusting relationship with God beyond the nine days. The novena ends, but the conversation with heaven does not have to.

A Closing Blessing for You

Friend, nine days from now you will not be the same person who started this novena. Prayer changes the one who prays, even before it changes the situation. So begin today, begin trembling if you must, but begin. St Jude carried the Gospel to the ends of the earth for people he would never meet. He will gladly carry your name before the throne of God.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him during these nine days. May St Jude intercede for you without ceasing, may your hopeless case become a testimony, and may your household know the peace that only heaven can give. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
